Cleaning house rates

I am wondering how much people pay or charge for general cleaning of house/apartment? Like general cleaning 2-3 hours once a week. Not deep cleaning only stuff like hoovering, dust, floors, bathrooms, changing bed linen perhaps bit of ironing.

15 cash seems to be the going rate.

More than minimum wage for a cash in hand job? is there a shortage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,891 ✭✭✭✭ted1

They are only doing 2-3 hours so have more travelling time then Someone doing minimum wage. So you are covering. 30 minutes either side. they will provide some if their own cleaning materials and paying Someone less would be miserable.

    €40 for 3 hours here

I dont think people typically get paid for travelling to work unless its rightly out of the way and it would be difficult to get someone. I dont see how its more or less time travelling than anyone on minimum wage? unless its a business, in which case they'll have insurance and overheads. I would think someone doing cleaning, doesnt typically provide cleaning materials, but if you want to nuke a discussion by saying to someone paying a certain amount is miserable thats the way to end it, which I disagree, I think €10 into the hand is fair, but I wouldnt expect them to provide cleaning items. Also, why are you answering like you are the OP? your response looks likw you are replying from an "other" account.

The average is between 10 and 13, depending on how many hours a week or month they are needed. You don't pay travel time?? And you don't have to pay cash, nearly everyone has a revolut or similar, these are rural prices.

Nor do they supply their own cleaning materials, it's not done because you have to supply the right cleaning products for your furniture and fittings, many a cheap cleaning product ruined goods. I know one woman had her oven blow out after the cleaner used products on a self clean oven, new house, not insured.

Some people give the cleaner a key and they clean whilst the family is out, so you have to get the right person and pay them well enough, that's up to you.

A deep clean, with the right team is usually 25 an hour,

The oven is usually an extra cost, as is Ironing, I can't remember any more, but if you are looking to hire someone, you have to pay what you think it's worth to have a stranger in your house, and make sure they come recommended. It is so worth it to get a little help,

10 euro an hour is under minimum wage. And minimum wage people generally don't pay any tax.

15 euro per hour for casual labour is perfectly fine. 10 is miserable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,409 ✭✭✭1874

I paid a lot more for a business to send a cleaner who turned up in a branded van, as for someone with no overheads, no insurance, no materials costs, no tax etc, €10 is not miserable, the cleaner who turned up for a business walks away with less after they pay tax/prsi. What you are saying is a person working cash in hand is better off than a person working legit, which is likely, but doesnt square with demanding a higher amount

Let us know the quality of cleaner you get for your €10/hour.

    Its €15/hour minimum these days.

It's miserable alright. I wouldn't want anyone I know traveling to a job, doing a good 3 hours work and traveling home for 30 euro.

And they do have costs unless they're walking to the job.

If thats the case, I may take it up myself and not bother going to the hassle of going to work, between that and JA/JB Id be earning as much with other benefits. As it is the cleaning gets done without needing to pay someone, Id rather that than be bilked if the quality varies so dramatically between 10-15 euros, as I said, I paid a lot more for a cleaner from a business, where you are covered for, who they might be and insurance purposes.

Most people will do a 7+ hour shift on minimum wage

doing 2-3 hours clean means you are travelling a lot more

im answering from my experience we’ve a team that comes in do 3 hours ( collectively) and its €4. Although we usually just give them €50.

they bring their own hoovers and mops. ( industrial ones) which they find work best as they used to use customers but sometimes they were just poor quality and the job took longer and wasn’t as good

they also bring a number of other things like bleach etc. no specialised product for cleaning tiles , toilets sinks etc.

The missus got shut of her- absolute cracker, I think it was jealousy not laziness personally!!

Maybe, Id have thought cleaners typically work in their own locality generally, they could have short journeys, but I do accept the work isn't as consistent or continuous so likely more journeys, I just think they could be shorter (depends case by case).

I use a company that provide a receipt and it’s €100 a week .That’s for 5 hours but sometimes it’s 2 cleaners for 2&half hrs.Paying cash to cleaners seems great until there’s an accident in the house and then it’s on you, also the issue of their employment can become a problem if it’s every questioned.Better to pay a registered business a little extra and then the problems are theirs to deal with.

15 and preferably registered self-employed. I'd check very thoroughly that any cleaning contract companies aren't exploiting their employees as its one of those industries that's rife with chancers.

Any recommendations for a cleaner in the Tullamore area - looking for someone to come in for one day 2-3 hours a week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,934 ✭✭✭RichardAnd

It's free if you do it yourself :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭scwazrh

It’s not free if you value your time .My time is worth more than 15 /20 quid an hour so it’s cheaper for me to pay for a cleaner than do it myself.

yeah, do that, for a sporadic 3 hours, see how long you last, mostly, you cant dictate your hours as a cleaner-the person hiring does, so it's practically a whole day. Traveling, getting set up in the house etc. I pay my cleaner e15 cash , there's a big difference between a e10 cleaner and an e15 cleaner-for me, mainly it's reliability and trust, I need them to come the day they agree to, in the time frame I need them. I need the job to be done right, without me having to check it, or me having to ask them to clean a particular area, If I have to do that, I'd do it myself. What kind of person pays someone e10 per hour for a one off job in this day and age? seriously.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,221 ✭✭✭patnor1011

Dunno about other accounts. Anyone who reply is free to do so. I was just curious since there seems to be big difference between what people pay/charge.

Parents have a cleaner who comes in for 3 hours whichever day suits her she just arrives and does it. Blitzes the place. Totally spotless after she has been. Iv e been working from home a good few times when she arrives and its impressive to watch the speed and thoroughness. They revolut her €30 after every clean.

You are talking about a 50% increase from 10-15, of course the quality is going to vary accordingly?

So you paid a lot more, but also expect someone to do it for a tenner an hour?

Minimum wage is more than that and your cleaner is going to have travel time also.

Oh and "not bother going to the hassle of going to work" Where do you think cleaners operate? In their own houses?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,367 ✭✭✭✭GreeBo

Think of it as a call out charge if it makes you feel better about it.

Most people don't do their work in multiple homes of other people either. The reason its more travel is that they dont just do one house and then go home!

My cleaner charges €13 an hour, she'll look after your pets as well, I have a cat. She's local to me but if she has to travel to a job she'll charge €15. She does a good job.

€15 an hour is the norm around here - Dublin.

If anyone has a reliable and good cleaner who is looking for more work in West Dublin area I'd be very grateful for a PM. Thank you.

I usually clean my house myself. Saturday is my cleaning day, and it takes about 3-4 hours to finish everything. Cleaning is enjoyable, so I don't see the point in paying someone else to do it.

The only time I hired a cleaning service was after builders cleaning from https://cleaningteam.ie/house-cleaning-dublin/. There was so much mess from the construction that I needed a professional after-builder cleaning. They did a comprehensive job, but I still prefer doing my cleaning. Seeing everything neat and tidy after I've done it myself is satisfying.

€50 for 3hr here, once per fortnight. It's a 3br 2ba in North Dublin city centre. She does a good job, no complaints.

I clean my house every Friday, and it takes about two hours. To hire someone to do what I'm perfectly able to do myself seems lazy and entitled to me. Just my opinion, of course...

If I make e25 per hour, and I spend 3 hours cleaning my house, that's e75. I can do it myself, but why? To top it off, I do not like cleaning and I'm not as good at it as someone that is a professional.

When I was single, I had a cleaner come in every two weeks, it made a massive difference, for e20 per week. Now, my partner does most of it and I do a bit, but only because she wants the place spotless every day, and she is very efficient at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,934 ✭✭✭RichardAnd

I just consider cleaning up after myself and keeping my home in good order to be part and parcel of life. If I'm able to do something for myself, I will do it for myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,457 ✭✭✭SharkMX

I would be the same for most jobs. I assume someone who does it every day can do a relatively simple job (cutting hedges, garden maintenance, cleaning windows, painting) twice as fast as i can.

So i work out that im willing to pay them the same hourly rate i get paid for my work. They would want to be taking half the time or even less than it would take me though. They may or may not pay tax on what i pay them, i dont really care. And sometimes its just easier to get someone else to do it if you have the spare cash and are feeling lazy. But generally I hate paying someone else to do what I can do myself.

But a guy quoting me €800 to paint my front door. No way. Ended up doing it myself in a few hours. You would think he would be good enough to do it in half the time i did it and he would have all the tools for it too.

Another lad came and asked did i want my hedge cut for €300. I said no thanks. Next door said yes. He butchered their hedge, didnt clean up after himself and was gone in less than an hour with €300. I went out next day and did mine in an hour a hundred times better job than he did.

But house cleaning. I cant do that :)

Yep, that's my take on it- I do my own renovations, I'll replace an electric shower in 60 minutes, or I have to pay a sparky e200 to do it.

I needed new gutters on an extension, it would have taken me a day and a half and paying big money for the materials, and it would not look professional. I get a guy in, he does it for e250 including materials.

Adjust the TV/antenna etc, it could take me up to 4 hours to do the 3 tvs, and very frustrating, and I may not know which part needs replacing, if any, I get a guy in for 30 minutes, give him E30, job done.

Clean the house, maybe E30 or e50 to get it done while I was out on my bike, come back to a clean house- I am not a slob, so I used to tidy after myself, but a cleaner every few weeks made me feel happy :)

I consider keeping my home in good order and clean an integral part of my life now. When I was in my '20's I was out a lot and home a little, it didn't matter much to me. I've been fortunate enough to have money to pay people to do the things I don't want to do, whether I can do them or not isn't the point.

I maintain my vintage car and keep it running , but that's only because it's difficult to get my mechanic to do the work on it, or my car could be out of commission for weeks at a time. I do basic maintenance on my main vehicle, as it takes about 30 minutes labour to do a service, and it saves me about E60, but if I want it cleaned, I drop it to the guy and he takes care of it for e25 and I can pick it up in an hour, or he will drop it back to my place.

I do things to make my life as enjoyable as possible, with the best value I can get out of it, that means, if I don't like doing something, If I can avoid it, I do.

I moved 22 ton of gravel about 400 feet by wheelbarrow last year over 2 days, If someone has an opinion that I'm lazy and entitled because I may hire a cleaner, then they are possibly living a very sheltered life and would seem to be closed minded and judgemental, but that's just my opinion ;)
