This sounds like the system needs to be repressurised but I don't know how or where

Do you have a gauge anywhere?

    A red expansion tank?

Boiler would fire up regardless of system pressure or air in the system. But it very well could then overheat and trip the safety overheat thermistor, located in the boiler housing. Before even thinking about resetting this, make sure your system is pressurised if applicable (i.e. there's water in all the pipes and rads).
