    Hi,

My kid uses a xbox one at the moment. Is a big user of xbox gold/ultimate, having a subscription.

Im looking to buy a new console for Christmas present.

Does nintendo switch have a similar setup, or is it just purchasing games independently?

    Thanks

Mostly have to purchase the games, there is no "Free game" subscription. But for some of the mario games alone paying ofr the switch is well worth it.

As above re: Switch. There are free games on the subscription. But they are emulated old games from the 80s/90s. Switch will give you portability and some of the best video games ever made. But you now have 2 consoles to feed. 😁 It's a great console.

Maybe a XBox Series X or S as an upgrade if he already likes that ecosystem. All his games and saves will transfer over. Controllers too. You can also get good GamePass deals. See the Xbox thread for details. And could sell the Xbox one. If he has a load of disk games he still plays then Series X would be better.

Is the xbox Series s a worthwhile upgrade to the one? Kid isn't a teen for a few years so might not be worth going to the X model yet.

Yep, so long as you don't have many disk games you want to play as they can't be played on it. You can only play digital games and GamePass stuff. You'll get much faster load times and smoother, faster, better resolution graphics on games. The X has twice the storage and even better graphics, but that's about it. If you don't have a 4K monitor/TV the X would not be much of a difference.

The original white one with less on board storage is probably fine too. There is a black one now, with twice the storage for 50 quid more. If you have fast broadband you can easily swap in/out games or swap to external hard drive. But 50 isn't that bad.

Also, I bet the white series s will be discounted before Xmas and maybe you could even get a refurbished one, "Like new" from Amazon for cheap too. (Same also true for Switch)

Also, look out for a bundle with a new game digital on it for about 249 euro, I'd say this Xmas. I'd say black Friday will have a load of bargains for the white series X.

It's also small and compact. Which is nice.

Btw don't buy games full price on Xbox unless it's demanded 😁. Wait for a large discount on sale (there are always sales on Xbox digital store) or wait for it to be on GamePass. And you can get good discounts on GamePass too. There is a thread on the Xbox channel about this.

Switch is great too, but if he's happy with XBox and GamePass and doesn't really even want a Switch, then you are avoiding a lot more cost and waste.

What games do they like ? If he wants to play the Nintendo only games, then Switch is the only option. Also, there is probably going to be a new Switch compatible console next year from Nintendo so it may be worth waiting.
