Civic petrol/diesel 2015

Hi everyone, I'm potentially changing jobs soon and will be looking for something to cover a daily 20km return journey. I'll probably have a 90km trip once a month. I'm looking at a civic petrol or diesel and they seem to have a good rep from reliability and running costs. A mechanic described the petrol 1.3 as "bullet proof" but I've been used of diesels for the last few years and don't hear much negative feedback on 1.6 diesel either. Any advice?

I'd stick to petrol for that type of usage. A diesel engine probably wouldn't even be properly warmed up on a daily return trip of 20 km. Then you could run into DPF problems down the line from the lack of proper long drives. Fuel economy realistically won't come into it with that low mileage either.

The Civic 1.3 petrol will feel gutless especially if your coming from a diesel so a 1.8 is worth looking for, there are a few around and even if mpg was a concern they are probably not much worse than the 1.3.

Thanks for the feedback, the 1.8's seem to be like hens teeth. Are the 1.3's noticeably slow? I'd nearly go with a 1.6 diesel as more of a selection for sale and there doesn't seem to be any horror stories online compared with it other diesels (or maybe it's just a Honda thing that they have that name for being reliable). I persume the north or UK is a non runner value wise due to vrt changes..etc even with petrol models. I actually like the interior compared with equivalent Toyota, ford, Hyundai or VW.
