The insane cost of camper van hire

Planning on going to Cornwall on holidays next year and was perhaps considering a camper van hire

well that’s not going to happen, circa €2000 for a seven day hire

even In very expensive south west of England, you can rent a coastal place for a week for that

Think you've answered the question right there, rental price = cost divided by time, owner should expect to make cost back in 2-3 years hence the price.

I like the idea of driving around in it for a week but there needs to be a savings incentive, there isn’t and the novelty of it just isn’t enough

OP you could look further afield - I remember renting a campervan in Germany in 2012 when Poland hosted the Euro's, we stopped in some lovely seaside spots in Poland and picturesque towns in Germany and the cost was very reasonable.

Just drive and bring a good tent, that's what I did in June just gone, west coast of Wales, we stayed in some really gorgeous spots, and there's feck all tourists at that time of year you almost have it to yourself. It's amazing being able to drive 15 minutes down the road straight onto a ferry too instead of dealing with airports. Campervans are a rip off and not worth it.

Had friends visit here from UK during the summer, they did The Wild Atlantic Way in a camper van they hired near Blackpool UK. Can't remember the model but it was a very modern van, plenty of space, all mod cons and cost them £1500 for 2 weeks.

Agree that they are a rip off for what they are. But I suppose then again the companies have to make their money in a 4 or 5 month season so that explains a lot of it.

OP there are a few sites in the UK where campervan owners put theirs up for hire, its like Airbnb but for campers. Should be cheaper than hiring off the big companies and you might find something very unique

Plenty of decent options under €1500 a week during may and June.

I'd avoid Cornwall at all costs in July and August. It is rammed. May is a fab month for that part of Britain

I looked at these previously but never used them. Rent from owner. Plan was to fly to England and rent from there. Prices were reasonable.

ill take the bait. They wouldn't charge it if people were not paying for it. And every other EU country drives on the other side of the road...so the market is 100 times bigger (or whatever it is) than IE/UK, so why would it not be cheaper...they have MANY more options.

So its a rip off/gouging for you personally and your perception..but thats about it.

£100000 camper, probably 600 hire days over 5 years is a cost of £166 a day.

add maintenance , insurance, breakages, tax and running the camper is expensive

then add profit.

2 grand for a week sounds pretty expensive, is it a top of the range 6 berth camper OP?

If you're renting and going to the south of England, I'd imagine you'd save a good bit of time and money by flying to Bristol or Exeter and renting one there, rather than renting here and getting the ferry.

It’s still cheaper to just drive our own car over on the ferry and book two different properties over the week, if you fly over you have to get to where the camper van is located for hire afterwards, based on figures the only reason to hire a camper van is the pure novelty of it
