Back door won't open

Hopefully somebody on here might be able to help. No idea why but since last night our back door won't open, the handle seems like it's stuck, it will go up but won't go down. It's a double door but we've only used the left door a few times in the summer, that won't open either but according to the OH the right door has to be open for the left door to open.

Tried to take off the handle on the right door but the barrell is very tight in the housing, got out the window to the back garden and gave the barrell a few gentle tips with the hammer but it wouldn't budge and I didn't want to force it.

Absolutely baffled, anyone any idea what the problem might be?

Going up but not down is what I'd expect when the lock cam is out. That looks like thumb-turns on the lock (the images are a bit blurry, and sideways) - are they turning? Do you have keys to use from outside?

Sorry about the photos don't know why they uploaded sideways, it was just to show the type of doors we have to be honest cos I don't know what they're called.

I have a key and it turns outside but the handle won't go down, the handle is going down on the left door but also won't open.

Could try locking and unlocking a few times maybe? Or pressing against handle side of door when trying to unlock? Or just giving the door a big thump? Also seen something like this before when something got stuck in the latch area when the door was last closed...

No point in tapping the barrel as it is secured by a screw. Only accessible when door is open.

Thanks for the replies folks, I'll try pressing down on the handle but I don't want to put too much force on it in case it snaps.

Is it sticking due to swelling of wet timber somewhere? Perhaps go out and push it in to see if it reduces friction against the lock cam.

Also strip away as much of the covers and soak everything with Wd40.

Went outside and moved the door out as much as I could with the back end of a hammer the whole way down and sprayed the whole length of the door with oil spray but still no joy. :(

I actually meant to say to spray the lock/barrel mechanism.

Managed to get the doors opened by popping the barrell, followed a video on YouTube, fitted a new barrell but the handle still won't go down to open the door, baffled.

the gearbox inside the multipoint lock has gone bad and will need replacing

Your hinges may have slipped causing undue pressure on the multi point. You could try popping of the caps amd adjusting the hinges to relieve the pressure on the multilock

Check for a slant on the top of the door downward towards the lock direction. From outside looking in
