fridge freezer using too much electricity

I have a small solar system in operation. Lately I noticed the batteries draining faster than usual. To make a long story short I bought an electricity usage monitor. I plugged the fridge freezer into it when it was running, I got a reading of nearly 90 watts. When it stopped running and was silent again I got a reading of 180 watts and this only changed when it turned back on again and the reading went back to near 90watts. Is this normal?

if it is frost free and you are getting a drainage of 180 Watts it must be in defrost mode where it uses an element

But would it defrost everyday?

Look up the user manual and see what the technical spec on it is,Not knowing what type of unit you have I can’t think of anything else that would use current while the compressor has cut out

Fridges 'failing' with the compressor on all the time isn't uncommon; but you need to monitor usage over an entire day or days to get a proper figure.

Frost-free defrost would be multiple times daily.
