'Tis a little-known fact that Irish monks effectively colonised the whole of the alemannic region of Europe, starting slightly to the West in Luxeuil (France) and founding monasteries across the northern Alpine region in no-name places that'd eventually become better known - e.g. Saint Gallen, Bregenz, Salzburg and ultimately Vienna.

I suspect that centuries of colonial rule helped the Irish forget that there was a time when we used to happily trek across the continent, and visited some pretty cool places before Ryanair made it possible to skip the interesting part of travelling and head straight for Europe's favourite bog-standard tourist hotspots.
