Heating Controls

MDP1

Current heating controls are timer with 2 zones (heating and hot water) and three options for turning on/off heating; mechanical thermostat in hall and thermostatic valves on all the radiators. See pictures. Would like to up-grade to digital thermostat and and wireless controls. Suggestions as to what would be suitable appreciated.

I believe you could get the hive system. Its a small square thermostat with a little screen where you can select the temperature. It also has connection to your phone and you can control the heating if your house from anywhere

I have the climote, you need a annual subscription but its not expensive. I really like it, works well for me setup with 2 heating zones. I don't think you can multi zone the hive without having a second unit.

I'd be very wary of investing in a Climote at the moment.

In a house rated B1 or A rated with a heat pump, I'd agree. House with regular rad and oil/gas heating, then those controls are beneficial.

Yes. Heating unused areas where the heat just migrates outside is a waste of energy.

Because of the fast heat up time of gas/oil in combination with rads, there isn't a need to have unused areas heated all the time.

A friend had a new Firebird condensing boiler fitted with trv's put on all the rads and the installer said to keep all valves fully open to stop sludge build up? They live in an area with bad water and have a well, is this good advice?

Yes, mag filter was fitted but he recommended to keep all valves fully open which I thought defeated the purpose! It was under the warmer homes scheme.

TRVs are a bit crappy. Central heating is a closed loop with very little new water added. Recommended temp is 21c in the living room, 18c in other areas. You can drop the bedrooms to 16c at night.

Can you have different zones with it? I don't want to heat upstairs and downstairs same time

Yes, as long as they are plumbed to do so.
