There is a very big difference between seeking general market information on salaries in practice etc which is a available and asking people to disclose specific information about their employer.

Nothing wrong with telling people where you work. Nothing wrong with telling people what you yourself get paid, if you choose to do so.

If firms are paying people well then it's great marketing for them.

To try to at least attempt to answer the op's question, I've heard of about €22k ish being the going rate for small practice in Cork.

Crazy money. Compared to what trainee solicitors get, why do accountants get such a low base salary

Oh yeah, it's not great. But I suppose they can get enough trainees at that sort of wage so no need to increase it.

It is in the €25k to €29k range at the moment but there was some increases this year and some firms are offering a sign on bonus. I suppose the accountancy section of boards is not a popular place for people just out of college:)

Trainee accounts come from multiple backgrounds with some never having studied accountancy but have shown they are good students. The firm's train them up and work them hard and the vast majority will leave within 12 months of qualification which generally takes 3.5 years as they earn more in industry than practice are willing to pay for qualified senior auditors.

Trainee solicitors all study law so the pool is smaller and I suppose these firms are hoping to retain a high percentage of them so they give a more attractive starting salary to get the best possible candidates in the door.

It basically comes down to what rate they can bill the trainees out and one industry wants to retain them post qualification while the others needs only about 20% to stay around for a while longer.

Well there was a time when trainee solicitors were paid a lot less that trainee accountants.... why do people accept it? Probably because it is a more mobile profession with a lot bigger earning potential and financial people are very conscious of this.

Considering the impending Pay Transparency Directive, your view is antiquated at best. In the U.K., such information as salary ranges for particular roles has been the subject of mandatory disclosure since mid 2000s. As the request is about Big 4 STARTING salaries then It could not be expected to be in any way confidential.
