Vodafone Gigabox ports - FTTH

Anybody know if you can connect an analogue phone to the TEL1 port on a Vodafone Gigabox router? Two hours with Vodafone re an upgrade from ADSL to FTTH and I'm no wiser. Their support line is stating that only VOIP phones will work with FTTH but the router documentation says that the TEL1 is a FXS port for analogue connections. I need to keep an analogue "panic alarm" system working. Anyone have an analogue phone connected to this router when running FTTH?

    Thanks

You should be able to connect any modern phone (NOT IP Phones) to it. The Router has a built-in ATA that does the VoIP bit and connects to the Vodafone VoIP server.

Not sure if a panic button system will work as I know that a lot of the house alarms that rely on a regular phone line wont work with VoIP systems.

Thanks pazzahead77. I was assuming that the router has a built-in ATA, hence the TEL1/TEL2 ports. But can't understand why Vodafone Ireland can't confirm if they activate the ATA ports. The Vodafone UK forums highlight that you have to contact them to ensure the TEL ports are activated but it is possible.

The TEL1 port should be enabled by default if you have the phone service from Vodafone. I imagine that they probably aren't if no phone service.

An actual VOIP phone wont work at all with Vodafone as they refuse to give you the SIP credentials, they really should train their staff better as that could cause someone to purchase equipment which wont work.

The only way to use their VOIP phone service is via the TEL1 port connected to an analogue phone or DECT base station with an FXS port.

This is my problem. I have been told by three different "call center" staff that to use the phone service you need a modern handset, i.e. old telephones won't work. When I asked what do they mean by modern handsets they all say the service is VOIP only and won't work for alarm systems, obviously reading from a script. No one can tell me is you can plug in a standard analogue phone to TEL1 and that it will work. If this is the case then my alarm system should work.

Thanks Dam099, if you are right then I should be OK.

Very old phones, such as rotary dial phones, may not work. It depends on whether their system supports pulse dialling or not. But any DTMF (touch-tone) phone from the last 35 years should work.

For regular phone service yes. A panic alarm depends on how it works, if it dials and sends a voice message I would think may be OK, if it uses some sort of data signal they can be finicky over VOIP but can only try and find out.
