I noticed today water dripping out of overflow pipe just under roof , I checked the water container in attic and when I lift the ball cock up water stops but was still filling up

Is there a reason why this is dripping out ?

Most likely a worn or perished seal on the ballcock. Replacement seal is cheap but a bit fiddly to fit.

If its been going for a long time, the ballcock itself may be worn.

Do you have 2 tanks? Is it a large tank that filling? Have you had any plumbing work done previous to this problem?

Might be a leak in cylinder coil.

About 6 years ago got the bathroom done the guys that came had to change water tank in attic they said was in a bad way and they put a new plastic tank in , im presuming it would have been a new Ball Cock at the time ,

Any recommendations for a plumber thats the hard bit

If you have easy access to the gate valve (to shut of the mains) take a good look or better still a photo of the faulty ballcock (assuming that's the problem) get a similar one in your local plumbers suppliers complete with washers/seals. Your local handyman will fit it....waiting for a plumber to call will require patience😁
