Painting non treated wood to last on a patio

    I have a big wooden cable reel that I am converting into a patio table. Ultimately I want to paint it a number of different colours.

    I want to ensure the wood is fully protected for a long life. I was looking at some wood preserver on Screwfix, but it says it can't be painted over.

    What is my best course of action?
