From an income continuity pov, is there a risk in giving a longer than required notice period! As in, 10 weeks instead of 4.

    Thanks

    Yes, there is.

Specific vary depending on your length of service, and the nature of your contract - eg if rostered you can face sudden hours cuts etc, if on probation you can be set go. Also even if you plan to travel (or whatever) there's always the chance of life throwing an unexpected curve-ball at the last moment and you having to change your plans.

If you really trust your manager, you may give then an informal heads-up that you plan to resign. But in general, don't do it any earlier than your contract required.
