We have a lovely four year old border collie and plan to get a second puppy in the next few weeks. Our collie is mostly an outside dog, we live on a farm so she gets lots of exercise, comes into hall or kitchen for a play with the kids but likes to be outside a lot and works a bit with the cattle too.

We are thinking of a collie puppy or a labrador - this pup will be more a family dog, will live and sleep outside, happy for pup to be in hall and playroom but not in rest of house. Plenty of space for exercise too and the pup will have our collie for company. We have a five year old and an 11 year old, both dog lovers who are outdoors a lot with the dogs too.

As we have always had collies, just wondering if there is any advice on which to go for? Anything about a Lab in particular we should take into account?

    What breed did you choose?

Considering your lifestyle and preferences, both a collie puppy and a labrador could be suitable choices as family pets. Collies and labs are both intelligent, active breeds, but labs tend to have a more easygoing and sociable temperament. Labs may require more attention to prevent excessive weight gain, so a balanced diet and exercise routine are important. Also, labs are known to be great with children and other animals.

We went for a gorgeous little collie pup. She has a lovely temperament, is very bright and loves company. Lovely to see the benefit of a companion for our five year old collie too, it took them a month or two for them to bond but they are inseparable now!
