Lexus IS300H or Honda Accord Hybrid

Considering either an IS300H or Accord Hybrid, from 2013 on.

Budgeting between €10,000 and €15,000. Currently driving an 07 Accord 2.0 petrol.

How do the two cars compare?

What should I look out for on them?

The IS300H's for sale seem to have higher mileage and higher price, but generally higher spec and are either original Irish-regged or UK imports.

The Accords are all Japanese imports, much lower mileage and probably better condition?

If going for the Accord am I as well to import it from Japan myself?

When do battery issues start arising and how expensive are they to fix?

    Any other recommendations welcome.

Accord all the way - the Jap import Hybrid Accords are a fantastic car. and you get a lot for your money. When my Insight dies Ill be buying one.

As for battery issues - Honda hybrids use a different system than others as in the electric motor is an assist to the petrol engine. You put your foot down and the petrol motor kicks in while at low speed you are using more of the electric motor using the battery pack. The battery recharges when you are coasting and braking and so on. In theory at really low speeds you very rarely use the petrol motor but thats not really true - theres always a bit of the petrol motor used. The two motors run in conjunction with each other to save fuel.

Ive never changed a battery in any of the Hondas that use this system even after 12 / 13 years. so that wouldnt worry me in the slightest.

Drive both and see what you think - only you can make the decision.

My one concern with the Accord would be the availability of parts and body panels. The last Accord sold in Europe ended production in late 2013, the newer ones were never sold in Europe so you could be waiting for ages for even the simplest of parts like a replacement headlight, door or even windscreen if you needed one.

Had a 2017 IS300H. It's RWD, so will be nicer in terms of handling than a FWD Accord. Got a ES300h now, (wanted more space - kids are tall).

Would argue there is a big size difference between Accord and IS. The Lexus is small, and the cockpit is a bit "intimate". IS has a superb turning circle, and is a doddle to park.

Would also argue the IS is better built than the ES. More Audi quality inside. Nothing squeaked, or felt flimsy. Only had it for a few years, so obviously nothing whatsoever went wrong. Because Lexus.

So Accord vs IS? Very different cars.

Got 7L/100kms in Dublin, and 5 L/100kms on long motorway runs. I drive like an old geezer...
