foul water manhole in kitchen

I'm doing up council terrace house at the moment in Dublin. It's in good nick so all the work is electrical/cosmetic etc. There was an 8m2 extension that looked to be put in on the last 15-20 years. I pulled up the vinyl yesterday and was presented with the gift of a manhole cover in the middle of the kitchen extension! I'm pretty sure it;s the foul water pipe that runs between houses at the back of the house

It forms a T, so I guess I'm the first in the line but as a mid terrace house, that seems wrong. Anyways I'll have a chat with my neighbour later about it, he's in the know on all the history of the houses so will probably fill me in. My electrican who lives in the are says it's very common in the area. He reckoned half the extensions that were put in, just sealed off the manhole. Obviously not a great solution for when things get blocked.

However I am looking for my options here.

    1. Leave as is (it's a wooden manhole cover, probably 40cm x 40 cm)
    2. Improve the manhole cover to try an keeps smells out
    3. Move it outside
    4. Block it.

I'm planning on redoing the extension in two years so I suspect option #3 is a waste of money. I don't like option #4. So that leaves me with option #2. I guess first thing is, is there such a thing? I was hoping that I could maybe replace what was there with something a bit more "engineered" and then tile the cover (and the kitchen) so that it was still accessible.

Anyway I'd love to hear some thoughts and suggestions.
