Sealing outer side panels of van? (Van conversion)

I've come across many videos on YouTube of people taking off the side panels and sealing the pegs with silicone and re-attaching them in order to prevent water leaking in. I've only seen it done on sprinters/crafters , as I believe it's a design flaw in them, and one transit. Do you think it's necessary on all van builds? I have a Nissan NV400 and am unsure if it is actually necessary. And have ye done it? Thanks!
