Electric gates queries

New to gates, wiring for a friend

There's a pair of photocells to stop the gate closing on a person/car

I presume these are "closing safety devices"

    There's a few different wiring configurations, opening/closing/edge

Also the transmitting photocell can be hard-wired or battery powered(CR2-3V). Is it worth bothering with battery or just hard wire it

    Thanks

The battery holders will eventfully rot.

You might have no choice to use batteries if you are installing edge protection.
