Looking to use a different App developer than the creator - How to go about it?

Long story short I had an app developed for my business and used a developer from Freelancer. The relationship has now run its course, not acrimoniously, as it was started 3 years ago and he has now moved onto better paid work by the looks of things.

There are changes I would like to make to it now but the developer seems reluctant to transfer any data on the app to me, despite not being overly keen on additional paid work either. He quoted me $300 to transfer the files onto my hosting account which sounds excessive.

The app is already on Apple and Play Stores. Is there a way to make updates myself? For example on my websites I just need the wordpress login. Is there something similar for Mobile apps?

you could either recode the app yourself or pay someone else to redo it for you. if you ask me the $300 for the original files sounds like a bargain

What were the original terms of engagement for them developing the App for you? Did it specify who owns the source code for the App?

No there is not something similar to Wordpress for your app.

Id ask him what the $300 includes and come back to us here.

likely not excessive but you may not have the technical ability to do anything with what he sends or gives you access to.

Based on your description, it sounds like you might not have full access to the app’s codebase or backend systems.

Unlike WordPress websites where you can log in and make updates directly, mobile apps are a bit more complex. They typically involve:

    1. Source Code: The files that make up your app’s functionality. Without access to these, it's difficult to make any changes.
    2. Hosting/Backend: If your app relies on a server for data (like user accounts or real-time features), you need access to this as well.
    3. Developer Accounts: Since your app is already on the Apple and Play Stores, it's important to have access to the developer accounts used to publish them. Without access, future updates to the app might be blocked.

To update the app, you’ll likely need:

    • Access to the source code (usually through a Git repository like GitHub or Bitbucket).
    • Credentials for the developer accounts (Apple Developer and Google Play Developer Console) if you plan to release updates.
    • Any details about backend services (databases, APIs, etc.).

As for the $300 quote to transfer the files to your hosting account, it may depend on the amount of work involved (file size, server setup, etc.), but if it feels excessive, you might want to get a second opinion from another developer.

In terms of making updates yourself, unless you're comfortable with coding and app development, you would likely need some technical support. Mobile apps aren’t as straightforward as WordPress websites, but you could hire another developer who can help with future updates if your current developer is unavailable.
