Boiler automatic air vent replacement

    Hi,

    The automatic air vent at the back of my boiler is leaking so I'm thinking of replacing it myself. As you can see the bend it connects to is rusty so I've ordered one of those as well, which is cast iron. I'm afraid it could difficult to get off or maybe I'd damage the pipe. Any advice for this job?

    Thanks

    you will need to drain down the boiler before you start and you need ptfe tape to wrap around the treads i would just replace the brass air vent

    I'd hit it with WD40 now and let it sit for a while.

    Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I'll hopefully give it a go next week.

    I can't find any valves for draining. Would draining via a radiator be the best way?

    If it were me;

    Turn off any automatic filling valve, (or supply to expansion tank in the case of an open vented system)

    Get a bucket and towels under air vent. Use a pair of grips and a spanner to loosen air vent without doing damage to gun barrel pipe fitting.

    loosen it a little and allow any major pressure to release. Then screw it out and put the new one already prepared with PTFE in straight away.

    Quick, and reduces the risk of air locks and problems restoring circulation associated with a full drain down.
