New programmer problems

Hi all, hopefully someone can help me. Ill give some details as it might help.

I have a firebird condensing oil boiler, 8 years old.

    Detached bungalow.

Plenty oil and everything was working a few days ago.

Programmer was an Grasslin Tecchron QE2

I'm fairly sure my old programmer had broken as it seemed to be frozen and wouldn't enter any settings mode no matter what I did, resetting it, taking it off plate etc.

Could not find a replacement online as its so old so I got a Drayton dual channel LLp2 programmer today in Screwfix as it was the only place open.

From googling it was meant to be a very easy swap as the wiring was the same and backing plate was also meant to be cross compatible.

The backing plate was very slightly different but wiring was identical so I swapped out for the new one. 100% sure its wired exactly as it was, took pictures to be sure.

Turned it on and all looked good, turned on heating to boost and went outside to hear boiler turn on.

Boiler never came on and I realised the room thermostats were set low so went back in and turned them up and went back outside and it came on. Delighted.

Checked the rads after a few mins and still cold so went outside and boiler not running.

All my motorised valves are coming on/lighting up when I select hot water or heating on the programmer and definitely have power going out to boiler.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Ok upon further investigation there actually is no power coming from the ( what i would call) thermostat in the boiler box itself to the burner. Power is going out to the junction box in the unit, going up to the galvanised metal box beside the white thermostat with a dial on it but not going to the Reillo burner.

The water pump is getting power and is spinning.

Latest update is that I got it running for a whole minute 😁 and then it stopped again. I was messing around with the reset switch on the Firebird high temp thermostat and fiddling with the dial and it kicked in. I did think the boiler itself was pretty warm for only running for a few minutes earlier and for literally 1 minute a short while ago. The reason I think the circulating pump is ok is because it was changed last year, its an IBO pump if that matters. Also I got one of those magnetic spinning disc keyring tools to check the pump in future and it is indeed spinning when held near the pump.

Well in the end it actually did turn out to be the circulating pump 😀. IBO pumps must be shite and they seem cheap enough. Just for ease of install I actually ordered the exact same one as I’d never fitted one but I must say it was a simple 10 minute job. €73 for next day delivery from Donegal, Heating Parts Warehouse. Last year I paid a plumber €350 to fit it.

Thankfully the new programmer is working a treat too.
