What type of a catch or latch do you think would be good for this attic door?

I'm not very familiar with catches. So just looking for ideas. I've been thinking a ball catch might be good for it. With some discrete pull handle. There'll be a rubber weather strip on the door stop. So I'm wondering at the moment if the ball catch would end up being fiddly when used with the weather strip? And maybe I should try to make a typical door latch work.

There's no panel on the back, there's just a board of PIR inside its frame.

Looks like there's no door stop. I'd suggest a plant-on door stop which could then have a draught seal fitted, finish off with a "budget lock", ideal for a inconspicuous lock that may not be used very often. You'll see budget locks used on plant and services doors in common areas of apartments etc.

There wasn't a stop when i took that pic. There is one now.

I don't really have a total idea of what I'm looking for. And I'm very happy with and appreciative of all the suggestions I've been given.

I suppose I like the idea of the thumb latch, because it's simple top operate. Though, it's surface mounted and I'm wondering if I'll be sick of looking at it :)

I like the idea of the budget lock. Since it's discrete. But you need a key to operate. It'd be great if I could find something internally mounted like that, but with a thumb turn to operate it.

I like your suggestion because it's a discrete handle, it swings shut, but can be opened from the other side. Though, I would need to adapt it to suit the depth of the door.

Top o' the class for thinking about opened from either side of the door. I missed that too. Wouldn't be much craic to get locked the other side of it :)
