‘Disastrous beyond comprehension’: 10,000 missing after Libya floods

Neighbourhoods washed away in port city of Derna, where two dams burst, with many bodies swept out to sea

Amnesty International’s new investigation shows that Israel imposes a system of oppression and domination against Palestinians across all areas under its control: in Israel and the OPT, and against Palestinian refugees, in order to benefit Jewish Israelis. This amounts to apartheid as prohibited in international law.

Things like this and the Moroccan earthquake are just heartbreaking, people in these countries have hard enough lives as it is (not the governments of course, who always live in luxury) and then disasters like this strike. Horrendous and so sad

Terrible loss of live and so unnecessary.

How many here will say, 'isn't that awful' and go out and vote for FFG and the Greenwashers in the next GE?

Ireland has a part to play in tackling climate change, our record so far has been very poor, we need to do more.

Nothing to do with climate change, these dams haven't been maintained in the 80s /early 90s at least, it was well documented there was issues with the structure of the dams ,the bad weather just compounded it ,the lack of governance and decocracy and multiple tribal conflicts and separate foreign backed governments is killing the state

Terrible scenes and an absolutely disgusting response from the western world. The UK giving a million pound and the US a million dollars towards the recovery. Embarrassing stuff.

There is no way to give and guarantee it gets spent on the people, and it's not Ukraine, the UK and France did most of the damage during the anti gadaffi civil war as far as they are concerned it's not there problem

You want to rely on a technology proven not to work on a calm day to generate your electricity, supplied by wind turbine manufacturers all of whom are recording substantial losses covering warranty defects?

That's not very smart now is it?

According to the original article, climate change was a factor and here's more analysis from the same source.

Of course you can look at any individual weather event and say that things like that always happened. It's the frequency and severity we're seeing which is terrifying.

struck in the early morning too, while people were in bed. the absolute worst.

Too late to stop climate change now. It would be a far better use of resources to learn to live with the changing climate, i.e. improving flood defenses, better building standards, real thought put into where houses are built .

All the bellyaching about climate change from the media and politicians is a waste of time and they only do it to sound like they care, if they really cared they'd be encouraging more positive action to deal with climate change not trying to close the stable door after the horse has bolted.

So what your saying is, let's stop trying to prevent or control crime...

And just give everyone a stab vest and an armoured car?

Real solid idea you got there. Can't see a single thing wrong with it.

Tell me, if we were even able to mitigate the worst direct effects of climate change, based on these building practices and our favourable geographic location....

What would we do about the economic and global security consequences?

Wherever you got your 'build a wall' idea, it doesn't really hold up does it?

Eyewitness reports and footage coming through now. Horrendous and heartbreaking. I urge everyone to do as much as they can and contribute to the search and rescue efforts.

Do what you can folks please. These people need our help
