Straining Post - Galvanised Pipe

A job I finished today. This is a 3" Galvanised Pipe used as a fence strainer. My first time doing this, but it seems to be fine. Someone recommended it to me.

I like these ratchet type wire strainers as they last forever. You have to remove a few barbs from the wire first, but that's easy enough. Just wind off with a pliers.

It's a perimeter fence, hence the 4 wires. There's a big drop on the other side to a house driveway that is only feet from the main N18 road.

Have you ever tried driving a metal post with a post driver @patsy_mccabe ?

Just wondering would it work compared to the digging the hole and setting concrete.

No. It wouldn't be as strong as with concrete. That's for sure. I tired driving an 8ft ESB pole there before digging and no way could I drive it. Ground too hard.

I've been using the concrete railway sleepers (€10) of late as gate and straining posts. Need a loader to put them into position, but sunk in 2 - 2.5 foot of concrete, they'd never stir.

If you don't want to wrap the barbed wire around the strainer, cut it short and make up the rest of the length with strong building wire looped onto the barbed wire. (Lazy man's way of doing it!)

Very similar to the strainers clipex stock these days. I drove my ones by hand, had to go 4ft deep wasn't easy but just about managed it. Had a small bit of carpet in the hand post driver so it wasn't metal on metal.

Our local mart has a machinery sale every month and there usually is a pile of them for sale in bundles.

Might be seconds, but good enough for the job.

Look up DD, or local merchants / farm stores. They're not scarce anyway, I see loads of old ones left stacked in sidings a few times when I'm on train journies.

Apart from posts that have to go into the sea - because waves will wash out gravel from a pipe - I'm not sinking posts into concrete any more. Learned the hard way once a post has failed. Now I'll sink a pipe into concrete, put in whatever post I need and pack gravel around it which keeps it nice and stable. When the post fails it's a much easier job to replace.

I had to fence a seriously rough steep piece of rock between me and a neighbour, as he relied on good ole hazel branches and baler twine, sometimes even together.

I said to myself there was no way I was going back in a few years to replace rotten wooden posts so I got some old RSJ's and cut them into lengths and bolted a 4x4 ranch fence post to them and concreted them in. I bought 6ft concrete posts and concreted them in, then I bolted batons to them that I could staple to. It was serious effort digging out limestone and trying to crowbar holes into rock and ferrying concrete in buckets, but if I don't need to replace them in the next 20 years it was worth every effort and pound I spent.
