Adding zoning or separation of hot water and heating in an older home

    Hi all,

Forgive my poor terminology, but Ill do my best to explain my question. I have an 1980 house with a gas boiler as part of a vented system. Is adding zoning so the hot water can be run off the gas without turning on heating a big job? The house had a new condensing boiler fitted and I just assumed that zoning would be added but I underestimated how complicated a job it is.

Depends on the installation, but typically involves getting a pipe from the boiler (or other convenient access to the boiler primary heating circuit) to the hot press.

Motorised zone valves are then fitted to provide separate control of central heating and hot water.

How complex depends on the individual situation. Perhaps a ball park cost of €1500, but no doubt a great addition to be able to control both separately.

Sometimes it's acceptable -and not as much work- to just have it so that your choice it to heat hot water only, or heating and hot water.

Please follow site and charter rules. "Resistance is futile"

We did this ourselves recently with a Honeywell Evohome system. We didn't have to get any pipework done as the smart TRVs just get screwed onto the existing ones. Cost roughly 1k all in, but that's because we had 11 rads to cover. It was 100% worth it and we've it tied into our home automation system too. Great system.

Sounds very messy in some homes. The house in question would not be too bad but I was also thinking about my parents home too. Their boiler is is a bungalow section while the cylinder is an adjacent two storey section so running a pipe would be complex.

Is there any advantage of this system over running a new pipe from the boiler to the hot press.

Quicker and simpler to achieve. Little disruption. Possible to control temperature in each room individually (with a mobile app)

But more technology/things to go wrong. Batteries to change. No temperature control of domestic hot water in cylinder.
