Maderia island name origin

anyone know where Madeira Island got its name? there was a brewery on it back in the 1800s, maybe they imported Maderia wine??

the 'island' occupied largely by Mill Street car park.. Madeira river is siphoned off the St. Clare River and enters the Eglinton Canal next to the Parkavera river

nice list of the mills etc on each 'river', they're really millraces and some of the names have been changed since then as well

Galway is sitting on a gold mine in terms of its waterways!
