New build --- no contractor

Hi, I have posted a few times and the realisation is that building, as a single person is out of my reach as the contractor I had chosen is increasing the price everytime I contact him. I have considered buying a house in the local town, outside my budget but not as bad and the house is ready to move into.

As an inexperienced person, is it possible to build without a contractor? Is there much of saving? As somebody with little experience, would an investment in a project manager be a wise investment or would the engineer be the best person including an additional fee.

    Thanks in advance.
