If I was snookered and the white ball was touching the ball snookering me, can I play away or do I have to try to hit the object ball or risk a foul shot.

You have to play away from the ball touching the white.

For example you are trying to hit a red and snookered behind yellow and touching yellow.

In that case you have to play away from yellow and hit a red.

You need to play away from touching ball every time.
