SEAI EV grant 2024

The grant is due to end this year but I’m hopeful that they will renew it at the last hour because I’m hoping to buy the updated Model 3 but it isn’t released until next year in Ireland.

Any insights? Are the government likely to renew it for another year? Any guess what the grant amount might be if they do?

I'm guessing we'll know more about that in the upcoming Budget.

At this point it's anyone's guess but my bet is they'll either reduce the grant to €2,500 or reduce the price ceiling down to €40k

Interesting, is €40k the net list price?

Below is Germany's phase-out for next year which might be of interest. They are moving the "net list price" of the largest grant to €45k (from €40k) and abolishing all other grants. Is the net list price equal to the retail price minus VAT and VRT?

I believe the grant has always been based on the ROTR price, which includes VAT, VRT and delivery costs

The current grant caps out at €60k and with several well documented price cuts over the course of 2023 I imagine the government will be eager to focus the grant on lower priced vehicles

I'd be wary of using Germany as an example, remember they've a massive car industry which the government is trying to support (and also has some degree of power over)

Ireland doesn't have any domestic manufacturing to support and EVs are already quite successful here, so they could aim to cut the grant faster. Having said that, it's a balancing act, if they cut grants and crater demand then manufacturers will just divert cars elsewhere

Given the lack of auto manufacturers in Ireland I don't think it's a primary concern here like it would be in Germany/France etc ...

The Europeans can start making cheaper BEVs. Everyone wants cheaper EVs but the manufacturers, forcing them to make cheaper cars is the only way.

The dealers are selling cars they're entitled to sell in the EU aren't they? Don't see how Irish dealers selling cars makes any difference to the car manufacturing countries that have dealers selling the same Chinese cars (for less most of the time) across the EU?

Well they're already selling Chinese made cars, as are dealerships in Germany and France

It's a good way to push European manufacturers to lower prices or else

Already happening, base ID4 is less than 40k now. I think 40k is the target price for a lot of standard EVs now with 25k being the next milestone if VW and Tesla plans go accordingly
