    hi all,

looking at trying out a French car for a change ( have done the German/Italian/Jap/Fords makes ) and was wondering what would be people's preference/experience be regarding which is better between the Citroen c5 ( 2011 onwards ) or the Peugeot 508 ?.

i have read up and it would appear that the 2.0 HDI engine is the Citroen is the preferred choice for reliability/economy and performance as is the Peugeot engine.

so look forward to your assistance

    brendan

Citroen and Peugeot engines are the same, though there may be slightly different configurations between the two models.

They are both basically the same car. 508 is probably better screwed together and are a bit more common in 2.0 litre than the C5.

The Citroen C5 2.0, if it's an Irish car, would be the Exclusive model and would have the Hydractive III suspension which, imo, puts the ride quality way ahead of the 508. UK 2.0s may or may not have the Hydractive suspension - I think the VTR+ UK 2.0 had the Hydractive. Aside from the suspension they're practically identical.

    I have a 2010 C5 2.HDi Estate 163bhp and my other half has a 2012 508 2.0HDi 140 bhp saloon model.

Her car is so much quieter inside, seems to be better insulated with sound deadening. The 508 is

a lot more comfortable too even though both cars have steel springs. If a decent 508 2.0HDi estate

came up for reasonable money I would buy 1 but they are hard to find in good condition at a sensible

price. I've just put a clutch and flywheel and 2 drive shafts into the C5 so I probably will hang onto it

as they are bullet proof once they are looked after, mine is coming up to 315,000kms on the clock.

The 508 has recently started to miss and hesitate to accelerate when it is cold. It is going into our

local HDi specialist this Sat to have a new fuel pressure reg fitted. Hopefully it will cure this, if not

we could be looking at the injectors to be overhauled.

MPG from both cars is brilliant. I use the cruise control everywhere. Both are brilliant cars once they

    have been looked after.

I had a 08 c5 for about 5 years from new and it was one thing after another going on it after the third year of ownership... switches, window regulators, wiper motors and the steering rack which made me go ciao to this car. They are not bullet proof and even with clutch and flywheel together with drive shafts, this is not bullet proof. French is not for me as I find them soft but I would agree they are very comfortable

There are very few 2.0 HDi around which is a pity,.

A clutch and driveshafts at 315,000 kms is general wear and tear (to me anyway). They didn't go

together. Right hand driveshaft got noisy at 284,000. Left hand one got a bit noisy around the same time

as the flywheel so I changed it while the clutch was being done to save labour. (Driveshafts would have been out anyway)

Steering racks can be a small issue, but most folk don't know they can be repaired using a high pressure seal from Abbey Seals in Dublin. €120 I was charged in my local Citroen Specialist.

Window regs can be bought aftermarket for around €80 and can be changed with simple tools by yourself.

They are not for everyone, I'm lucky that I used to work for the PSA group from 1997 to 2012 and still have lots

of contacts. Each to their own, my Dad drives a Jaguar X Type that he loves, I'd rather walk or use an E scooter and I won't give

you my opinion on E scooters!!! Hahahahaha.
