A handy 25-move win in round 5 with white against a 2217. Will be on a top board next round, likely with black, where the top seeds have been fairly generous with quickish draws.. (the now very common Berlin 14-move repetition on board 1 this round for instance, while board 2 only lasted 11 moves longer). 2475 live, around a 2600 perf.

Edit: I actually think he'll flip and get another white. Possibly GM Ivan Ivanisevic (2541).

Edit #2: a few extra players made it to 4/5 so its GM Pier Luigi Basso with black for Conor in round 6. Game starts at 2.30pm Irish time.

Edit #3: On rating average, he'll need to play an average opponent of 2404 for the last 3 rounds after today and score 3/4 so a long way to go.

Edit #4: Conor did most of the pressing in round 6 and he did have decent chances without taking too many risks. Peace broke out before move 40. 2.5/3 required for GM norm. Live rating remains 2475

Draw in round 7, making the norm more unlikely as 2/2 required against what will be tough opposition. Likely one black and one white - so he can hope for a lower rated opponent in round 8 with black before another 2500 GM with white.

Conor had a win in that game but with 60 seconds it was tricky to calculate an exchange sac (which would have put him a rook for 3 pawns down), which led to a QR+3 vs QR+2 ending as black has to give a rook back for 2 pawns to avoid mate. tricky.

    2476 live, another new high.

Still a very good chance of winning the tournament I should note.

Edit #1; missed a tricky win earlier with the crushing Nf3! instead of f3. But this game is wild. starting to calm down now with a slight edge for Murphy.. His opponent does have oodles of time on the clock though.

Murphy takes round 8! Really wild game. He's now on 6/8, most likely white tomorrow with a win giving him his third GM norm. 2481 live - a win tomorrow would bring him to 2486-2487 and all the required norms. GM Subelj the most likely opponent currently but lots of games still to finish in round 8.

Edit #1: hmm, not looking like results have gone Conor's way for colours. 4 players on 6/8 - 3 are due white. I think Conor's colour flips to black and he'll have GM Ivanisevic (2541).

Edit #2: right the first time. GM Subelj and, somewhat crucially, Conor will have white. Possible ratings after that game: 2480.6 currently. So win: 2485.8, draw: 2480.8, loss: 2475.8

2487 after his win (against Carsden Peterson - gained 1 rating point) yesterday.

surpassing 2505 (Brian Kelly's highest ever rating) looks highly achievable in the short term
