Hi, I hope this is right area, I have an old laptop which I have Lubuntu installed on it due to the spec. This is working but I would prefer to install ChromeOS Flex. I have followed the instructions but my laptop doesn't boot from USB. Just wondering any method to install from DVD? or any method to install? I don't want to have multi boot

In the Bios I don't even have the option, just have CD/DVD, HDD and LAN

Can you not burn a DVD with ChromeOS and boot that?

EDIT: Ah I see it is a 6.6 GiB image so won't fit!

I would imagine the following might impact whether you can use ChromeOS or not ...

ChromeOS Flex’s system requirements have increased, compared to its previous incarnation as CloudReady. The major changes: You now need 4GB RAM (up from 2GB), and a processor manufactured after 2010.

Sorry that's the question, when I look around I don't see the option, it just seems to refer to USB boot

Anyway, thinking about this I wonder if it could be installed from within a live session of Mint (or other Linux) using the below scheme (see video) but with some changes.

For instance if the ChromeOS files were placed on a USB drive and that drive was mounted in the Live Mint (booted from DVD) you might have success.

No, I have not tried it, just trying to think of a workaround to the boot and size limitations of DVD.

IMO it would be worth a try if you are determined to put ChromeOS on the device.

Personally I would prefer Linux. 😁

Thanks, Im using Lubuntu because I felt it was the best version for older laptop, any recommendations if sticking to linux?

I have installed a SSD, put in 4GB of memory, which is max.

It has a AMD Dual Core proc in it, not fantastic at all

Of the Ubuntu/Debian based distros I like Mint - it might be worth a try in a live session to see it if suits the laptop.

Other than that I prefer PCLinuxOS which is a rolling release and very stable.

There are 4 official ISOs - Mate, KDE, Darkstar (KDE light), and Xfce - as well as a few community re-spins such as Openbox, LXQT and Trinity. Official ISOs available here

Sorry to hear that, but thats all part doing things, you win, ya lose, but ya always learn and know more next time

First pc i built i fitted a €200 cpu and it died in 10 seconds, saw the bios screen on the monitor, smelt burning and it cut off and never booted again :(

Oh I am well used to the joys of blowing up electrical devices :-)

In reality not a huge loss as I got it free and its the latest in a long line of devices. Onwards and upwards.

I am looking out for the next device to pick up cheap and see what I can do with it
