Nissan Leaf - Galway to Waterford

Hi

Bit mad I know but here goes, I have a 2014 Nissan leaf 24kw battery, battery is at 84% right now after nearly 10 years so not too bad.

Planning a trip from mid/east Galway to Waterford City.

Has anyone by chance done this in a Leaf of this vintage and how did they get on?

What route did you take

Edit: I rarely take this car too far from home so don’t have much experience etc

Hi! I just popped the details which you provided into ABRP and it came up with three proposed routes.

I set the min arrival charge level to 15%, battery degradation to 20% and departure charge to 100%. You can play around with those values as needed.

Other than on the motorway if you keep the average speed to 80 kmph it seems quite doable in the Summer months!

For navigation such as this, I input each charging point into Google Maps and use that to navigate to each individually. With a journey like what you are describing for I'd also check before departing on the next leg whether the next charger is online and operational before setting off, otherwise I can modify the route to an alternate charger. I use the ESB / EasyGo apps for that, but PlugShare is also good to check the status of each.

I know it's a bit of work, but it's a challenge!

Beware there is no ChaDeMo charger for leaf in all Waterford city. There are new esb chargers east of the city and in tramore. Try to stay somewhere you can slow AC charge overnight. Bring your public AC charging cable and a granny cable and extension lead.

If you are not used to long distance travel stop often to charge. Allow for queues at chargers at peak times. Make sure you picks sites that have ChaDeMo option. Keep speed down as high speed really has an impact on range. Real world range may be lower than you expect on motorway trips.

Hi everyone, we have been advised that during the course of the installation of a new 100kW charger in Waterford, a previously unknown type fault was identified which resulted in the removal of the charger.

The charger was replaced with a CCS/CCS device for a period while the fault is repaired, after which, the CCS/CHAdeMO unit will be returned to service. We will be commissioning a new high-powered charging hub at Slieverue less than 6 km from Waterford next week which will have both CCS and CHAdeMO available at this location.

We will issue a further update on the unit in Bolton St when available and wish to apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Also beware that the new chademo/ccs at slieverue outside waterford city is in a petrol station which is not 24hr, they lock the gates at closing time so check before you go there to charge that theyre actually open.

Anybody know about the charger at Barlos Kilkenny. Seems to be a main Nissan dealer. Is it only available during business hours?

That's not true anymore.

The barriers are gone. its 24 hour.

I think you can park outside Nissan barlos wall and pull the cable over it.

Correct, but it's a courtesy charger and not a commercial one, so it's limited in terms of it's use.

Last update was January 2022, so I suggest telephoning garage if you intend relying on it. It looks like they suggest parking outside the barrier when closed and then possibly no fee applies. Policies can change and a similar garage in swords now refuses to fill up any EV when they used to be helpful.

There is an EasyGo Rapid Charger in a Lidl in Kilkenny with a chademo - Its the one on the Waterford side of Kilkenny. (When I charged there a few months ago, one of the apps guided me to the wrong Lidl (the one near to Barlo 🙄)
