Hi, been quoted 320 for brake pad replacement and 550 for pads and discs. This seems like crazy prices to me. Does this seem expensive or what is the normal cost of that? Also, only 60000 km on the clock.. do disc's really need to he done already? Thanks

does sound a lot alright, but ive been lucky for years, as my mechanic just doesnt charge me for anything, rate wouldnt surprise me from a garage though, some can be absolutely ridiculous, whats the car? really must start doing small jobs like discs and pads myself, wanna learn, only way to find out....

do it yourself. simple job. few hours max each side. parts can be got online, as can vids instructing you step by step. you'll need a proper jack and tools though.

btw how do you know they need replacing? who told you? did you inspect them yourself?

Can be a tricky enough job with quite a bit of dismantling depending on the make. However I would be thinking €250 tops.

I do that sort of job myself and would expect around €70 for the pads and €80 for the disks for the parts.

Depends on the car and where you're getting it done.

    Probably normal main dealer prices.

Yeah, I'm fairly handy with stuff but not sure if I would trust with something as important as the brakes and I have no proper lift etc. It's Huyundai Kona... still under warranty so brought to main dealer for the free checkup... there is a squealing noise when driving from the driver side front wheel arch. It passed NCT on Saturday but they gave advisory on pads. Would worn pads cause the squealing sound like something is rubbing? Also is it just a given to do the discs at the same time. I know a couple of lads who have done car work for me before.. think I will try them maybe.

Disks should last at least three sets of pads, but I have been told they have thinned them right down on newer cars so it might be different. Still I wouldn't go changing the disks unless they show uneven wear. There is a disk spec which can be measured to see if they need doing.

Squeeling may be a built in feature, a little tab built into the pads to indicate they need changing.

You don't need a lift to change brakes, but the cylinders can be hard to work with. Ytube will generally have a good vid on what's involved. Some disk pad replacements are a doddle and would take less than half an hour a side.

Thanks for all the answers and expertise folks. Boards is so brilliant for this stuff! Would love to have a crack at it myself but tied for time. I rang the lad who did work for me previously and he said should be no need to do discs.. said it hard to give exact price but roughly be around 100-120 quid to do the pads and a mini service too - oil, filters... so happy days. These main garages are VERY expensive it seems! Thanks

the squealing noise is most likely the worn pads rubbing on the disc. some cars have a piece of metal that will do this to let you know they are worn & need changing. i agree discs should last longer than that. dealers are a rip off imo. i've saved €1,000s down through the years by doing these small jobs myself. my screen-wash water bottle is blocked. my dealer quoted me €320 to unblock it!!! no brainer!

    That's a premium price.

I wonder how much it costs for audis, mercs and the like?

to do the job, probably similar to other brands, but since theyre bigger brand names, more for the name....

the parts will be more expensive for sure, although most of them are probably the same you can buy yourself, ie brembo, bosch, zimmermann etc., you are paying for the labour costs for their mechanics, 'er sorry technicians, and of course somebody gotta pay for those fancy showrooms and all that lovely coffee & croissants ...

I am a master tech , and depends on the car for the price of the brake pads which and differ a lot depending on the make and model and what engine is fitted as the brak calipers and discs can differ for a higher horsepower engine , for a the electronic handbrake a OBD scan tool is needed and not a cheap one , toy wing back the electronic brake piston , but this can also be done with a 12v battery and 2 pices of wire , SEE YOUTUBE . labour i charge for front and rear is 110 euro, this is not inc the price of the pads

qnything over 400 euros is been ripped of not matter make of car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 frank44552

That there is a ripoff , front discs on a average car, 70-90 euuro, brake pads front about 35 euro and rear brake pads about 338-30 euro/ go to mmick'sgarage put your licence plate number in, and check out how much dro front brake pads as they are the most common to go, at that is where most of the braking pressure is applied to, and then check out the rear brake pads. but soud's like to me you are been ripped off. Go to a real garage, not a rip off merchant

Depends on the car but unless you're talking sporty higher powered cars it really shouldn't be more than 300.

Garages love upselling brake pad and disk replacements - the work is piss easy for a mechanic and customers are likely to agree to any work "recommended" by a garage as everyone understands that brakes are critical for safety.

Hyundai are known to be very expensive for pads and disks, this has been documented on here before. I know that Hyundai don't make the parts themselves but I believe they are of really good quality. All the same I would get a local mechanic to do the job.

Paid 450 for front disc's pads plus rear pads on a Seat Leon. It had 165k on the clock and the front pads were never changed previously and still weren't fully worn. With such limited wear I went main dealer / oem parts
