Article Stating That Driving Testers Are Mean...

... as for testers being grumpy? I've done tests in a couple of different categories, the testers are never pleasant. They are matter of fact, they don't bond with you or make small talk... their job is to be objective and analyse your ability to control a vehicle. Grumpy persona is par for the course. It sounds like the complainants are looking for reasons to be upset.

Slow news day, give this the attention it deserves, none.

I'm far from being a snowflake, more like snowman, yet still I would qualify exam in Wicklow as not a pleasant experience.

The bit about the tester "nitpicking" got me. It's quite literally their job to asses your performance and pick up on any areas that you need to improve.

I'm sure some of these complaints are from the generation that think they should get a medal for 'doing their best'. The complaint about 'nitpicking' is just stupid.

However I have no difficulty believing that some people encountered very unpleasant driving testers. Lots of people are very nervous on the day of their driving test and there is a type of person who would get a kick out of making their day worse.

There is also a type of older man who just bloody loves exercising a bit of authority over young ladies. They mightn't even be aware they're doing it but the opportunity to make a young woman feel uncomfortable and humiliated is like Christmas to them.

I had a reasonably pleasant driving tester, though he wasn't chatty or anything. Before that though, I had a driving instructor who would find a reason to suddenly shout at me during the lesson. For example, he would bellow "TOO LATE!" when I indicated. No matter how early I indicated, he just got a kick out of making me jump and making me second guess myself. I was young and didn't have the confidence to stop the car and let him walk back. I would do it now, no bother, but that's why he picked on early-twenties me - he knew I wouldn't stand up for myself.

Some men believe, deep down, that cars are THEIR thing. Women, or even young men, shouldn't be allowed to get too comfortable in them.

if anything i think testers need to be stricter, too many idiots on the road that looks like the collected stamps to get full licence.

I'm confused, were these issues experienced during the driving test or during driving lessons? Some of the complaints mentioned sound odd for a driving test - i.e. car cutting out 3 times on a hill start. Surely you would be pretty competent at practicing that by the time your are doing your test.

The other stuff is comical and sounds like the person just couldn't accept they didn't pass. Would be interesting to get the pass rate percentage of those making the complaints. They just sound like they are resentful of the outcome.

From my own experience and few other people, many places pass people who drive without hint of confidence but drive the way exam guys like. And You can see that on the roads.

I know someone who passed their test and drives a car as little as they can get away with, as they are extremely nervous and unconfident when driving. They're a terrible passenger also.

I keep seeing people driving without L or N plates who are very hesitant and excessively careful. This makes them unpredictable, for example on roundabouts, when they could stop at any point even though the way ahead is clear.

Driving testers are just very stern.

Their eg could burst into flames in the middle or the test.

    There response would be,

"Please up on the left when it's safe to do so".

I applied for a job as a driving examiner a few years ago, One of the things you had to do as part of the recruitment process was a roleplay exercise where you are the examiner and a girl who you've just failed for driving through a red light is upset. I can't remember much about it except that they didn't progress my application after that.

Confessions of a Driving Instructor starring Robin Askwith?

BTW I'm being serious about the roleplay exercise - the upset driver who had gone through a red light and failed her test was played by one of the recruiters while I played the driving examiner. Pretty weird experience. The recruiter was hot too :-)
