Is a shower pump necessary?

We are having our shower in the en suite replaced. We don't have a pump at the moment - ok the pressure wasn't super but we survived 10 years like that and it wasn't a huge deal. It needs replacing and our plumber has suggested a couple of options and is pretty definite we need a pump . . .fair enough but I'm not sure if we really need a pump or if he thinks we need one to have a certain pressure . . . there is another bedroom on the other side of the ensuite and personally I'm not thrilled about the prospect of a shower pump waking people up. We were fine before without it. Is it necessary, any way to tell? Also are there any super-quiet pumps out there?

Depends on your individual setup, but in most cases a shower which is not pump assisted in some form or other will be very poor.

I presume the current (and new) shower will take water from your hot water cylinder? Which has already been pre-heated by an immersion or boiler?

If so, you could put in something like a Triton Novel SR. These are very quiet. Wouldn’t be the most amazing shower experience, but if you have been used to no pump at all, it will be a vast improvement.

I agree with poster above for the triton novel SR silent running thermostatic power shower. You won't hear the pump outside of the bathroom

Also look at the Triton T90 SR. I find it very quiet compared to the older T90's.

A gravity fed (non thermostatic) upstairs shower gives me around 5.0LPM, little bit greater than a electric shower which I also have.

The pump in our house is in the hot press. Very quiet.

Once you’ve tried a power shower you’ll never go back.

A showermate pump, for example, will only cost you 150 quid from screwfix and will serve blissfully strong showers for many years. It's a no brainer.

Ours is located in the walk in wardrobe and is fairly quiet.

If it wasn't a big deal before then maybe you don't need the hassle. My banjaxed Mira Event gave up the ghost and I just decided I'd spend longer in the shower instead.

Of course that's just me not being arsed. Also I'm grumpy because I think the guy downstairs put in a T90Z and it would wake the bloody dead. I hear good things about the T90SR though. Or don't, haha.
