Gas Boiler ignition fails

    Hello

Gas Boiler ignition fails - boiler is on (green light, displays temperature), tries to ignite (clicks, green light blinks for 1-2 seconds), but ignition fails. In 3-4 seconds or so cycle repeated. Tried to switch off, wait for 10 min, switch on - no luck. No red light, no fault code. Water pressure is ok.

Boiler is Glow-worm 18si, 17 years old, last minor repair in 2017. Apartment in Dublin 18, first floor. Before calling boiler repair service thought it's better to check here for advice.

    Thanks

    Hi

I had the exact same problem recently. Called out a RGI who charged me 180 euro for a "service" and didn't fix this problem, even though the solution to it is a service item according to the boiler manual.

I don't have the same boiler you have so can't give exact instructions for your RGI but it's likely to be a gas injector that has carbon build up. Definitely an RGI required fix because it involves opening the combustion chamber. The injector looks like a small brass spherical or conical thing about the size of your thumbnail. The RGI will use a small pin to clear the jets. You can find the job that the RGI will do on YouTube for a number of different boilers, they're all similar

You could show your RGI this clip if he's struggling :)

    Best of luck.

Hardly the exact same problem if it’s a different boiler, don’t be giving uneducated advice about boilers. It can have serious consequences

It's either 'failure to ignite' or 'failure to register that it has ignited'. Either way you'll need the services of an RGI to diagnose and rectify.

You need a solenoid to open to allow gas to flow, and ignitor to make a spark to ignite the gas and then a detector to tell then system that the gas has ignited (if it hasn't then the system will shutdown because you don't want to keep gas flowing when there is no flame). So it could be any one of these sub-systems.
