Mice or similar in the gooseberries

This year my fruit bushes weren't great for various reasons but to cap it off, when I decided to pick what was left of the crop for a fool or two I noticed the telltale pile of half eaten berries around the base of the bushes that said that the local rodent crowd had been having a party at my expense

    Basically I was stripped bare.

    What to do next year?

Is it very important to ensure the weeds are kept low so that there is little cover to embolden the little critters?

Should I resort to setting traps ?

Any other ideas? (No hope of nets keeping them out I would suppose)
