VRT mistake with V5C - help?!

    Hi all,

Hoping for some help with a mistake I likely made with purchasing a car in NI last week.

I bought a golf that was originally NI registered and has proof of being in the state before Jan '21 - no issues there so only VRT payable.

When purchasing the car yesterday I filled out the V5C with the seller. I filled in my address in ROI in the section for permanent export. I kept the "New Keeper" slip only, the seller kept the rest of the V5. I realized my mistake today, however the seller has already posted the V5 to the DVLA.

    My question now is

1/ Will the DVLA post the V5 to me in ROI - googling suggests they wont.

2/ If the DVLA wont post the V5 to me, how do I gain a new V5 to get the car through the VRT?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Get onto the DVLA non stop to see will they stop the processing of the form and send it to you.

Once it's processed then you are fooked....you need to reimport the car into the UK and then once imported they will issue a v5 to the person who imported it (must be a UK resident) then you can take that v5 and vrt it.

You will likely need to present the car for inspection to reimport it

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. I just applied for a new logbook using a UK address straight away, because the new logbook gets issued quicker than the car being marked as exported.

You could get the seller to apply for a new logbook, or there are companies that can do it for you

The quickest and easiest way out would be to do an online change of ownership to someone in NI.

You will need the reference number off the front of the V5 which is the same as the one on the new keeper supplement minus the first digit.

Transfer it as if you were the owner in NI you bought it from to someone else, when they get the V5 use that to import it.

Thank you both, will try those options.

You can't do this once it's marked as exported, it's gone from the UK systems then so it's critical this is done before it's marked as exported

It is not marked as exported yet.

The OP has the new keeper supplement section of the V5C, it has a reference number on it which is identical to the one on the front of the v5 that was posted if you remove the first number.

If they do this now it will be processed instantly online, the form posted in will take a week to process.

Well we don't know that, we haven't the timeframe of when it was posted, just that it was last week so it will definitely be cutting it fine 😬

Ah I see now, they say last week in one paragraph and yesterday in the next, I picked up on the yesterday and thought it was just after happening.

In my experience it takes ages for a car to be marked as exported. Like 2 months+
