friend of a friend looking to buy one of these for his daughter , for sale at a small used car dealer who would not be well established. it Says car has ' alarm / immobiliser ' . Is it likely to be an aftermarket one and is there trouble insuring these cars now that so many have been stolen ?

Some are aftermarket, some come from factory.

Plenty of insurance companies insuring them. Axa and Allianz for example

Unless they specifically need an automatic, then an Irish /UK spec would be a safer bet for insurance, I would say limiting a young driver to certain companies might rule out some good deals.

Also, garages, or car sales websites that populate spec items in an advert may assume a JDM car has an immobiliser where it may not have. I wouldn’t just take it as fact.
