Golf Accommodation

    Hi All,

    New to the forum.

I did a quick search and cant find anything on this issue. We play a lot of golf and as my young lad needs to be playing a lot around the country to get better its not exactly a cheap exercise.

As you can imagine I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible and I'm looking more at arming myself for next season rather than this year. Usually i try and stay in as cheap accommodation as is possible but with ever increasing prices is ridiculous what some places charge.

One idea I'm looking at is a roof top tent for my Volvo XC70. I know this will be an initial expensive outlay but its fast and efficient to erect and its something which i can take off the car for the winter..

A lot of these events run for 3-4 days withy practice rounds included. This week alone i travelled from limerick to New Forest golf club 4 days on the trot up and down, as it was cheaper on diesel than it was to stay for 3 days. Some B&B's were demanding 100 euros a night. I'm trying to way up all expenses Food, Fuel etc.

As he had some early tee times this week it wasn't fair on having to get him out of bed so early to be on the road to have him there an hour before tee off so he could warm up. I don't mind lack of sleep but he needs as much as a teenager can get to function properly.

Anyone went down the route of doing this or something similar.

    Thanks in advance.

John Daly lives in a camper Van.

Do you have to be with him when he is playing events? I respect that you want to help and be involved, but I presume he carries for himself?

How many junior golf events in Ireland take 4 days?

Firstly. Fair play to you for the effort you are putting in so your son can play golf. I done it for 10 years with two daughter showjumping and I know it’s a massive commitment.

Would you consider a caravan? Some of them now are as comfortable as a hotel room and there’s loads of room in one. There’s loads of caravan parks around the country and when you pitch the caravan, you have your car to travel to and from rounds.

    Hi,

Yes I take a lot of interest in being with him. He is currently playing off a 1.4 handicap, and only turned 15. Golf Ireland championship events are a practice round on day 1 with Rounds 1 and 2 on the days afterwards followed by a 4th day which is the final day in which the field is usually cut down from 120 players to the top 35 or 40 ties of players with the lowest scores of the previous 2 rounds.

At U18 boys level there are usually between 6 and 8 junior events at this level in all 4 provinces. So you can imagine the travelling and the expense that comes with them.

Thankyou. The upside for me is I also play golf as well and he has a club in his hands since he was 3 years old. This would be a good alternative but we live in a housing estate with very little room outside houses with the exception of a driveway for the car.

    Have you looked into sponsorship?

A bit cheeky, but maybe some of the US colleges are offering pre enrollment costs for juveniles on the cusp of entry?

I would try to play in your local province where possible.

8x3x 100 per night will cost you 2,400 x 2 = 4,800 per annum in bnb's . Try to book in advance, you know where these tournaments are happening, usually early or midweek. Are they in the summer, I am just considering peak prices?

He is still a bit premature for sponsoring. The top kids in these events are usually on international panels. Although my son will probably be on the golf Ireland high performance coaching panel over the next 12 to 18 months it would be a bit arrogant to look for sponsorship for him. The other side of the issue is these events are usually only fixed early in the year they are played. usually January so pre booking even then would be still expensive i would think.

Yes the usually begin in April and run until September until they are back at school.

If it was me I buy a caravan. Sure you can store it in a lock up. Few friends I have do it dont ask me where. But their caravan is purely for holidays but they still have to pay for a lock up.

@Mike48 If you don't want the full expense of a caravan I would invest in a decent tear drop trailer. Perfect for 2 to sleep they're real comfy and fairly inexpensive around €3,000 for a good 2nd hand one. After about 6 or 7 events it'll pay for its self.
