The simplest routing I'd suggest would be: N5 to Longford, N4 to J16 on the Mullingar Bypass (where you'll see signs for N52 Dundalk): N52 to Ardee, N33 to the M1, and M1 North over the border.

Or you can take the N5 east to Swinford, then the N17 north towards Charlestown, crossing the border into Northern Ireland where it becomes the A34 leading to Newry.
