iCloud email - silent spam filtering

Apple has long used silent spam filtering that totally blocks certain emails. Unlike Gmail and other providers these emails aren't filtered to the spam/junk folder, they are blocked on the server and never visible to the user. Mostly it's probably porn and other rubbish but there have been plenty of reports of legitimate emails not arriving, not even in the junk folder. I had terrible issues ordering from Three a couple of months ago due to this and eventually had to re-order using my Gmail address. While it was possibly an issue on Three's side, I am inclined to blame Apple's spam filtering. I have been using iCloud email for years and while these issues have been few and far between, the fact that it is still happening has me wondering if iCloud isn't a reliable email provider.

Has anyone else experienced issues like this with iCloud?

I'd be interested to hear of alternatives. I also find their spam filtering is pretty poor on Apple Mail.
