    Hi lads,

Would like some thoughts on what others would do in this situation. Have a 2010 520d for the last three years. Needed some jobs doing when I bought it, couple of common oil leaks, glowplugs and module, clean out of intake and EGR. Car is in great nick for the age and has mostly been problem free since that initial chunk of cash was spent on it but over the last 6 months I've been dogged with DPF problems.

Had the DPF removed and sent off for cleaning as it was nearly blocked. I got a few months out of that, until I noticed the oil level was above max on the dipstick. Thinking it could be a seal on the diesel pump, I changed the oil and topped up to the max and a couple of weeks later, the oil level was again above max. Took it to the garage which got the DPF done and no fault or leaks with diesel pump seals were detected on the diagnostics. Mechanic believes the regens arent completing and because I rarely do more than a 20/30 minutes spin with only the odd motorway run, he's guessing diesel isnt being burned in the regen cycle and is ending up in the sump.

TBH, I'm sick to the teeth of this and I've decided I'm either going to get rid or go for a EGR/DPF delete and remap. The car has 160k miles on the clock and has a lot of service history and was always well looked after, very much drives like it to. I tow a small trailer with it too and it's great for that. Tonnes of poke. I'm just thinking am I mad sinking another 500 quid into a car of this value when there's a high likelihood something else expensive will crop up a month later, (Turbo or the dreaded chain!)

At the moment, Im driving a diesel Avensis while the E60 is off the road and while it's not as nice to drive, I know it's basically bulletproof and would it make more sense to move onto something like that.......

    What you think?

Try a tank of HVO100, it burns more completely, gives off about 90% less ash into the dpf.

It does cost more, but weigh it up against the cost of repairs.

How much are repairs costing, and how does that stack up against an extra €10 per tank.

It might be worth a punt.

Gut DPF. Blank EGR. Stage 1 remap. Never think about it again.

Can you not just drive it hard when you are on a journey had a dpf cleaned from an avensis over 18 months ago and not a bother since.

Point being I'll have to go out of my way weekly to drive it hard for 30/40 minutes to be sure the regen is completing..........and even then I have no assurance it is. It's just a massive pain in the arse....

Have taken Blake's advice and am going to try the dpf/egr delete. Will report back
