Learning to Drive - Accompanying Driver Query

    Hey all,

I am preparing for my driving test and had a question on the criteria for the accompanying driver. I understand they need to have a license for a minimum of two years, but I haven't seen it specified if this needs to be an Irish license, or can it be a driving license from anywhere? The person I intend to have accompany me has a license from outside the EU just for some additional info, in case that makes a difference.

    Thanks guys!

if their licence is currently valid for use in Ireland it should be fine. But there are validity time limits on non EU licenecs. So be aware of that, ie a US licence is 12 months max

If the person accompanying you is resident in Ireland, they are legally required to obtain an Irish licence. One may only drive on a non EU licence if a 'visitor' to Ireland. I'm unsure how they define 'visitor'.

Yep that's where it gets complicated. For example You are allowed to retain a us licence as a visitor to Ireland for up to 12 months. But if you become resident then you have to get an Irish licence.

I'm assuming ordinary residency, but that kicks in after 186 days, so that makes no sense either...
