I currently drive a 2014 kia optima diesel 1.7 , weekly spend of approx €85 on fuel.

If I switched car to a 2017 Hyundai i30 1.0 petrol, is there any rough way of working out what my approx fuel cost would change to?

Figure out how many kilometres you drive each week and get an accurate l/100km figure for the i30 and work it out that way

And don’t forget you are potentially spending thousands of euro by changing your car in order to save maybe €20 or so a week.

Thanks. I didn't realise I'd save, I thought I might be spending more

Basically I know someone selling the i30 and it's absolutely immaculate condition. Only 60k on it

My Kia is fine but over 300k on clock and I'm wondering is it a good opportunity long term.

I've been thinking recently about going for smaller car anyway

I don’t know if you’ll save anything or not, I assume you won’t save much. I thought you were changing specifically to save money on fuel which is why I said the most you’d be saving is probably €20 or so if anything

Petrol is currently 10-12 cent per litre more expensive so you might not save much.

However it's an opportunity that doesn't come along every day to get a good car that you know the history of with low miles.

Not enough info to give more than a guess, but the Optima is probably averaging 50mpg or 5.6l/100km, so assuming you’re paying €1.50 for diesel, that’s 56.6 litres a week. So driving around 1000km a week

A 1.0 i30 averages around 44mpg or 6.4l/100km, so to do 1000km will need 64 litres, it’s averaging €1.62 around here so will cost you €103 a week or about 20% more.

At 50kkm a year, a diesel makes sense, a diesel that’s more economical than your Optima (a lot are) makes even more sense.

Great thanks for that info, that's very interesting. Ya I'm tipping up around the 1000km per week

Out of interest what diesels would you recommend in terms of being more economical?

You would to be nuts going from a diesel to a petrol car driving 1000km per week especially one with a 1.0 litre 3 cylinder engine. You are also dropping down in terms of comfort going from an Optima sized car to a smaller i30.

I also own a 1 litre 3 cylinder engine and they are great around town but you do massive mileage and if some of that is on a motorway then they are even less economical at motorway speeds (120km/h).
