Possible Careless Driving Offence North Ireland

Hi folks, just as the title suggests; I was in an encounter with a gentleman in Northern Ireland today who claims that I pulled out in front of him on a busy street. After the knock on my window, he proceeds to inform me that he is a police officer (no ID shown) and he is reporting my southern reg to the authorities. What are the chances of anything coming from this?

Or worse penalty points or disqualification..As far as I am aware he did not have any video evidence as he was visually recording my reg plate.

No contact was made from either vehicle and I suspect he was over the speed limit.

Even without any video evidence of an alleged careless offence, could I be prosecuted if he was an off duty officer?

    Any input seriously welcomed.

    Thanks folks.

Going from experience, even if he had a genuine complaint there's too much effort/paper involved for anything to be done with it given the minor nature of their alleged complaint.

    Don't stress over it

No chance. He’s trying to put the **** up you. You might or might not get a phone call but that would be the height of it.

It's just some random nut job.

If anyone ever tells you they are a Garda or Police Officer, immediately ask

them for their ID. If they don't show it tell them to get FC UKed and take

a photo of them to report as impersonating a Garda or Police Officer. Too

many of these screwballs walking the streets.

Did you get his reg number? If,so report him to the local PSNI office for, possible impersonation. If,genuine you might get a visit from An Garda Siochana asking for a statement from you. If,there is a prosecution your statement will be evidence.

    Nothing's gonna happen.

If he was a Police officer in the first place (having failed to officially identify himself)he can't initiate a prosecution himself, as he is the alleged 'victim' and was off duty.

He would have to report it to someone else, and assuming he has no evidence of anything then he's not going to tell another officer that someone hurt his feelings by pulling out in front of him. His colleagues have better things to be doing, plenty of people committing offences in NI without tracking down a driver down here for allegedly something that happens every 30 seconds or so.

He took no details and even if he remembered the registration it is from another jurisdiction so not worth another Police officers time to deal with.

This is a no stress situation, they hurt their ego a bit, nothing will happen!

Coming down the road and saw the ROI reg and thought he’d have some ‘fun’.

Did you have someone with you? At least then you’d have a witness to back you up if anything comes of this, not that I think it will.

Legally, if he was driving alone and so were you and there is no Dashcam footage, other witnesses or a collision, it’s his word against yours. And we all know how valuable that is. There is no case here.

Sorry you had this experience OP, road rage is very unnerving on its own, without it happening in an unfamiliar place and intimidation and possible sectarianism added to it.

Take it easy for few days and try not to dwell on it too much. From what you have said, you’ve done nothing wrong, this situation was entirely caused by this other man.
