Getting Irish licence but keeping UK one

My brother started driving here and had a provisional licence back in the day, he went to college in England, stayed working there so did his driving test there and got his UK licence. He is living in the US now but might move back to the UK so he doesn't want to exchange his UK licence for an Irish one.

When he is over here he can use my car but insurance is a pita, I have open driving so it would be much handier if he had an Irish licence. Is there anything stopping him from just going through the process of doing a test here and getting a licence?

in short, hes got 1 year of being in ireland befor he must exchange his licence if issued for a country outside teh EU?ECC which the uk is.

if hes in th US hes got 3 months to exchange, unless he has an IDP, then its a year again.

That's the thing, he's not looking to exchange for an Irish one, he will only be here for a few days every so often so it makes it easy to just grab a car (insurance wise) from a family member if he had an Irish licence. I looked to add him for a week to my insurance one christmas and was quoted nearly 300 Euro if I remember.

I believe you can't hold 2 EU driving licences at once, but since the UK isn't in the EU anymore can he hold both at once?

I'll get onto the ndls but I was hoping somebody here might know.

In your first post you said you had open driving, second post you need to name him?

UK licence is accepted here as far as I'm aware.

Yeah, open driving for anyone with a full Irish license between 24 and 70. When I rang about it I was told they wouldn't be insured, hence the quote. I can't remember the insurer Aviva maybe, I usually change every year.

It's not just holding a second eu licence.

It's holding any recognized licence, that's not allowed... That includes usa, Canada, south Korea etc etc etc

Countries who's licences that's aren't recognized are the likes of north Korea, Afghanistan etc

Now having said that.. the last time I gave additional info on this subject the thread was closed.. so I'm saying no more.

I just checked, my current policy, fbd, says UK and EU are fine. I'm almost certain whoever it was before didn't insure for a UK licence although I did mention him living in the states so maybe that's where the quote was coming from.

I did not know that, since he lives in the usa now, I guess his uk licence is now invalid until he moves back there.
