How long does an spd last

I know this will be one of those how long is a piece of string questions. But is there a suggested lifespan to the cartridge (change every 3/5 years) or is it entirely dependent on surges?

It's a matter of checking the indicator on the device. Lots of small surges can eventually do it, or one big surge might do it right away.
